About Children's Day

Given that Japan Festival 2017 falls quite close to Japan's May 5th National Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi) holiday, the always-family-friendly event will highlight Japanese traditions that celebrate the healthy growth, happiness, and prosperity of boys and girls.

Taking center stage will be the large, colorful carp streamers (koinobori) that are used across Japan to honor children and inspire bravery.  The Japanese consider carp to be the most spirited of fish owing to their ability to fight their way up rapid currents, and as such, the carp has become a symbol of courage and high achievement.

The symbolic carp streamers for Japan Festival 2017 will be created by young cancer patients in Texas Medical Center.
